Relay for life is a national event hosted annually. The
University at Buffalo is one of many locations in which this event to raise
money for cancer research is held. UB is also home to Nu Alpha Phi’s Delta
Chapter. In hopes of raising money and creating more birthdays for those
affected by cancer, Nu Alpha Phi raised $605.
The event begins at 6 pm and lasts until the sun rises
again. Themed relays or walks are held at scheduled times for participants to
see the booths set up by other participating teams. Many teams sell food or
drinks. Our team sold cup noodles and made 68 dollars. All proceeds go toward
Relay for Life and a better tomorrow.
There is also the luminaria ceremony; a defining
characteristic of Relay for Life. Relay for Life sells white paper bags with a
glow stick inside for one dollar. These bags can be decorated and then placed
around the perimeter of the track where all participants will walk around.
These paper bags represent the many lives lost to cancer. The ceremony; where
there is a speech, a video and the lights come down, is a somber one. The bags
are easily visible and everyone can see how cancer has affect the lives of all
that contribute to a better tomorrow.
Nu Alpha Phi is about serving the community and is proud to
participate in one of the largest relays in the nation
