Stony Brook Nu Alpha Phi Community Service : ING MARATHON

Organized by New York Road Runners, the ING Marathon is an annual event that has been ongoing ever since 1970. The marathon consists of a course that passes through all the five boroughs of New York. Whether it be for personal achievement, or a particular cause, runners put their hours of training to the test with this 26.2 mile dash to the finish line.

For the second year in a row, one of our very own alumnus Andy "Mercury" Au, ran the marathon. We were all enthusiastic to show support, and cheer him on during the race. We even tracked him on the TrackMyRunners application to make sure that we knew exactly where he was, so we would not miss that split-second of him passing by. Our particular station was toward the end of the race, where we supplied the runners with both water and gatorade. Some of the brothers were also stationed elsewhere, to clear the paths of empty cups and trash for runners. We collaborated with other groups of volunteers in setting up tables for various drinking stations. Of course, the most important, and exciting, task of the day was to hand out drinks to the runners, as they ran by each station.

All in all, the community service was fun and enjoyable. It was definitely an awesome experience, being able to help out at one of the biggest marathons in the world. It was also a privilege to witness and support one of our own alumnus during this event. Having Mercury in the marathon made the event much more exciting. We plan to continue to show support and SERVICE to this event, and to spread the presence of Nu Alpha Phi.
